The Outdoor Skills Series
Our
Outdoor Skills Series is integral to the Roaring Brook
Program, providing campers with knowledge and practice of
the following skills:
Toolcraft
Survival training
Lost-proofing
Outdoor cooking
Leave-No-Trace
Marlinspike
Environmental awareness
Water rescue
Wilderness First Aid
Expedition planning
Wilderness orienteering
To live comfortably in the woods one must know how to cook
over an open fire and backpacking stove. Each group of 6-8
campers, with counselors supervising, prepare and cook
their breakfast and supper together.
All boys in the 4-week program spend a night out on their own or
with a partner, near the end of the camp session, to
demonstrate the skills they have learned in classes. For
many, the survival experience is the most meaningful part
of the Roaring Brook experience. For safety, staff
participates in this activity within close proximity of
camper's camping sites.
While developing the skills required to plan and execute a
safe trip, boys come to know and appreciate the wilderness
and become responsible, independent outdoorsmen.
